Memory

Purpose: Memory is used to store key details about your story that the AI will always keep in mind while generating text. This is useful for maintaining continuity and consistency throughout your narrative.

How to Use:

  • Accessing Memory: You can find the Memory feature in the sidebar of the NovelAI interface.
  • Adding Details: Here, you can input important facts about your characters, settings, plot points, or any other detail you want the AI to remember. For example:
    • “John is a skilled swordsman with a scar over his left eye.”
    • “The city of Eldoria is under a dark curse that causes eternal night.”
  • Length Consideration: The Memory is always active, so keep it concise to avoid overwhelming the AI. Focus on the most critical elements.

Lorebook

Purpose: The Lorebook is a more detailed repository where you can store extensive information about your story’s world, characters, and events. Unlike Memory, the Lorebook isn’t always active but is referenced when relevant.

How to Use:

  • Creating Entries: In the Lorebook, you create entries for different aspects of your story, such as characters, locations, magical systems, historical events, etc.
  • Trigger Words: Each entry can have trigger words or phrases. When these words appear in your story, the AI references the corresponding Lorebook entry to generate more informed content.
    • For example, if you have a Lorebook entry about a character named “Luna”, you might set trigger words like “Luna” or “Moon Priestess”.
  • Detailed Descriptions: Unlike Memory, the Lorebook allows for more in-depth descriptions and backstory. Here, you can include longer explanations, histories, and nuances.

Best Practices:

  • Use for Rich World-Building: Include detailed world-building elements that enhance the depth of your story.
  • Organize by Category: Create categories like “Characters,” “Locations,” “Items,” etc., to keep your Lorebook organized.

Tags

Purpose: Tags are used to influence the AI’s behavior and stylistic choices. They act as signals to guide the AI in generating text that matches a specific tone, genre, or style.

How to Use:

  • Setting Tags: You can set tags in your story to instruct the AI on the kind of output you want. For example:
    • [Horror]: Makes the AI generate text with a darker, more suspenseful tone.
    • [Romance]: Encourages the AI to produce content with a focus on relationships and emotions.
  • Combining Tags: You can combine multiple tags to refine the AI’s output further.
    • For example: [Horror] [Gothic] will prompt the AI to create a story that is both eerie and gothic in style.
  • In-line Tags: You can also insert tags directly into your story text to adjust the tone mid-paragraph or for specific scenes.

Best Practices:

  • Experiment with Different Tags: Try different combinations to see how the AI responds and find what works best for your story.
  • Use Sparingly: Overloading with too many tags can confuse the AI. Stick to a few well-chosen tags to guide the narrative effectively.

Combining All Three:

  • Memory: Use for essential, always-relevant details that should be constant throughout the story.
  • Lorebook: Use for rich, detailed world-building elements that the AI should reference when relevant.
  • Tags: Use for influencing the AI’s writing style and tone to match the desired mood or genre.

By mastering these features, you’ll be able to create complex, consistent, and engaging stories with NovelAI that stay true to your creative vision.
